In this article, I am going to tell you, how can you grow chillies at home, from seed which is quite easy. We tried growing chillies at home on experimental basis and the experiment was fruitful, so I thought to share my learning with you all.
Steps For Growing Chillies At Home
For growing chillies at home, first of all you need, fresh red chillies for seedling, means you have to pick the Green chillies, which have ripened and have turned red. It will help the plant to grow in a large quantity. Do not use dry red chilli.
Remove The Seeds Carefully
Remove the seeds of the chillies carefully, with your hands. Do not cut the chillies with knife. Make sure that you are wearing gloves while doing so. If you are not wearing gloves and removing the seeds with bare hands, then you must wash your hands properly after removing the seeds.
Type Of Soil To Be Used
We used a mixture of simple garden soil and compost soil for chilli seedling in a small pot. Compost is a rich and crumbly blend of partially decomposed organic material. It improves soil structure. If you do not have compost soil, then you can use only garden soil.
Sprinkle Seeds Carefully
Sprinkle the seeds carefully over the soil and make sure to avoid overlapping of the seeds. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Do not over cover it. Gently sprinkle water over it, so the seeds do not come out. Keep the pot in the sunlight. Let me clear that in this season, you can keep it in direct sunlight while in summers, you should avoid keeping it in direct sunlight.
How Long Will It Take To Germinate
It will take 7-10 days to start growing.
Repotting And Caring Of Chilli Plant
Once the chilli seeds have all germinated and grown well (grown up to 5-7 inch), so it’s now time to repot them into a large pot. You can use 10-12 inch pot. Replace it with fresh new compost. Make sure the soil of the plant in its original container is moist. If not, water the plant.
Use Pot With Hole At The Bottom
The pot or the container must have a hole at the bottom. It allows water in the soil to drain freely, so adequate air is available for the roots. For better growth of the Chilli Plant, you should keep one plant in one pot.
Sunlight Is Important
Chilli peppers grow nicely in full sun. In summers, keep them in partial shade. They need light but avoid keeping in direct sunlight, so they grow very well.
Overwatering dilutes the nutrients in the soil, so the plants struggle. Always let the soil dry out before you water again.
Fertilizer For Chilli Plants
In order to make chillies grow faster, use Vermicompost. It shows promising results in the cultivation and obtaining of the higher quality chilli.
Banana Peel Fertilizer
You can also use banana peel fertilizer for maximum growth and maximum flowers of the Chilli Plant. This is the cheapest and the best method of making liquid compost.
How To Make Banana Peel Fertilizer
Peel off the the banana and chop it into small pieces. Keep it in water for 24-48 hours. Strain the water. Add 5 times the amount of natural water to it. Water the chilli plant with this liquid compost or you can simply chop the peels and add to your garden’s soil directly. You can use cow dung manure as well.
